First Night on Northgate? Here's Where to Go
Welcome to Aggieland, freshmen. You've survived your first week of classes, you've figured out where your buildings are, and now it's Thursday night and someone in your dorm just said the magic words: "Let's go to Northgate."
Don't panic. We've got you.
What is Northgate?
Northgate is a strip of bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues directly across University Drive from the Texas A&M campus. It's been the go-to nightlife destination for Aggies for decades. Think of it as the unofficial campus extension where the real education happens.
Before You Go
What to Bring
- Your ID — Real one. Every bar checks.
- Cash and/or card — Some places are cash only for cover
- Your phone — Charged. You'll need it for Uber later.
- Comfortable shoes — Trust us on this one
What NOT to Bring
- A bad attitude
- Expensive jewelry or things you'd be upset to lose
- Your car (seriously, don't drive)
The Perfect First Night Route
Start: Dixie Chicken (8-9 PM)
Begin your Northgate journey at the most iconic bar in College Station. It's chill early in the night, the drinks are cheap, and you'll feel the history. Play some dominos, grab a pitcher, and ease into the night.
Second Stop: Carney's Pub (9-10 PM)
Walk over to Carney's for their drink specials. It's a good middle-ground bar — not too intense, not too quiet. Perfect for the transition from "hanging out" to "going out."
Third Stop: The Backyard (10-11 PM)
Time to turn up the energy a bit. The Backyard has a great outdoor vibe, music, and it starts getting lively around this time. This is where the night starts to feel real.
Final Stop: Halo (11 PM+)
If you're ready to dance, Halo is where you end the night. The energy peaks after midnight and it's the closest thing to a club experience on Northgate.
Survival Tips
- Stay with your group — Northgate is safe, but it's always better with friends
- Drink water — Seriously. One water for every two drinks.
- Know your limits — Your first night isn't the night to be a hero
- Have a ride home planned — Uber, a sober friend, or the late-night bus
- Be friendly — Aggies are some of the friendliest people in the world. You'll make friends.
What to Expect
- Lines — On weekends, popular bars have lines after 10 PM
- Cover charges — Some bars charge $5-10 on weekends
- Noise — It's loud. That's the point.
- Fun — An irresponsible amount of fun
The Day After
If you did it right, you'll wake up with a few new friends, some great stories, and maybe a slight headache. Welcome to Aggie nightlife. It only gets better from here.
